Jim Thorpe: The World's Greatest Athlete | PBS America 01:05

Jim Thorpe: The World's Great Athlete - premieres 10.15pm, Tuesday 13 August PBS America | Sky 534 | Virgin Media 243 | pbsamerica.co.uk This enlightening documentary profiles Jim Thorpe, arguably the most versatile and naturally gifted athlete of the 20th century, and his battle to affirm his Native American identity. This is the first film to document Thorpe's life beyond his sporting triumphs. At the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Thorpe won gold medals in both the pentathlon and decathlon. It was later discovered, however, that he had previously played semi-pro baseball, thus invalidating the strictly amateur rules that then governed the Olympics. Thorpe was stripped of his medals, but received a number of offers to play sport professionally. This remarkable all- rounder went on to play Major League baseball and NFL American football. Thorpe retired from professional sports at the age of 41, but struggled before finding work in Hollywood as a bit part player. He became a representative for Indian extras, fighting for equal pay for Native Americans in the movies. During the 1940s he traversed the nation as a public speaker for the cause of Native American self-determination. The film features interviews with Thorpe's surviving children, simple recreations and archive images to create a compelling portrait of a man who overcame racial prejudice to become an all-American hero.
